Care
Acropora yongei is a branching small-polyp stony (SPS) coral with fairly thick, upright branches. It is one of the more forgiving Acropora species and is often recommended as a first acro. Common hobby colours are green, cream, blue and purple-tipped forms, often aquacultured. LiveAquaria's general Acropora listing (Acropora sp.) is the source for the care below. Placement: upper middle to top of the rockwork, with high light (acclimatised gradually) and strong, alternating flow. Water: stable chemistry in an established reef: alkalinity dKH 8–12, pH 8.0–8.4, low nitrate and phosphate, and regular calcium, magnesium, strontium and trace element dosing. It is relatively fast growing, which makes it popular for fragging. Selling: this is a CITES Appendix II coral. Frags grown in the UK can be sold freely; wild-collected or imported pieces must have been legally imported with CITES paperwork. Aquacultured frags are common and are the best choice. Diet
Photosynthetic: zooxanthellae provide most of its food. Fine broadcast foods (phytoplankton, zooplankton, SPS foods) help growth and colour.
Breeding
One of the easier acros to frag. Cut branches with bone cutters, glue them to plugs with gel superglue or epoxy, and keep frags in good light and flow; they grow on quickly.
Compatibility and tank mates
Peaceful, with short polyps. Keep it out of reach of LPS sweeper tentacles and away from leather corals' chemical effects. Watch for Acropora pests and for angelfish and butterflyfish that nip polyps.
