Water snowflake is a tropical floating-heart found right around the tropics. It spreads by rhizomes into clumps of small, rounded floating leaves, and bears clusters of white flowers about 1 cm across with frilly, hairy petals, which give it its name. In the aquarium it is usually grown at the surface in open-topped tanks, tubs and paludariums, where it flowers freely in good light. Plant the rootstock in the substrate in the midground; leaves will head for the surface on long stalks. It can also be kept in summer patio tubs. The sources give no water figures. Water figures are our estimate, not from the sources. Never release this plant or dispose of it in drains or waterways; it is invasive in some countries (it has become a weed in Florida). Breeding
Spreads by rhizomes; divide clumps or detach the plantlets that form where leaf stalks meet the leaf and plant them once they have roots.
Compatibility and tank mates
Snails and plant-eating fish may nibble the leaves. Its floating leaves shade plants below, which suits shy fish. Needs tropical warmth.
