Care

Süsswassertang (German for "freshwater seaweed") is a frilly, deep green plant that looks like a liverwort but is actually the gametophyte stage of a fern, most likely Lomariopsis lineata. It was long sold as a liverwort and is still confused with Pellia and Monosolenium. All trade plants are thought to be clones of one plant found in Christel Kasselmann's aquarium in 2001, and attempts to grow it on into a normal fern have failed. Its body is profusely branched and only one cell thick, forming dense cushions. Wedge or tie it onto rocks and wood, or keep it under a mesh; loose pieces float about. It is slow but undemanding. Water figures are our estimate, not from the sources. Sources: Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lomariopsislineata); Wikipedia, List of freshwater aquarium plant species. Checked October 2026.

Breeding

Breaks into fragments, each of which grows into a new cushion. Tear off pieces and attach them where you want new growth.

Compatibility and tank mates

Ideal for shrimp and fry tanks, where it gives cover and grazing surfaces. Large or digging fish can tear it loose; most small community fish leave it alone.
