Care

Scleronephthya is a non-photosynthetic soft coral that forms clusters of soft branches tipped with polyps, in orange, red and purple (LiveAquaria). It resembles Dendronephthya but is somewhat easier to keep. LiveAquaria lists it as Flower Tree Coral and labels it Expert Only, for an established reef tank and an experienced keeper. Place it on the bottom or under overhangs with low light and medium to strong flow. Water: LiveAquaria gives dKH 8–12, pH 8.1–8.4 and 22–26 °C, with strontium, iron and trace elements. Sources: LiveAquaria (liveaquaria.com/products/flower-tree-coral-expert-only-colony). Checked October 2026.

Diet

Not photosynthetic: it has no zooxanthellae and must be fed. LiveAquaria lists live or frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia and zooplankton; feed daily, or dose a fine plankton food continuously.

Breeding

Possible by cutting a branch and attaching it to rock, but rarely done because keeping the parent fed is the main challenge.

Compatibility and tank mates

Peaceful (LiveAquaria).
