Care

Potamogeton malaianus is now usually treated as Potamogeton wrightii, an Asian pondweed of slow-moving fresh water. It hybridises with shining pondweed in Japan and China. The sources give little detail. In aquaria it is grown as a tall background stem plant with long, narrow, wavy-edged leaves, often with a reddish-brown tint. Give it a deep tank, a rich substrate and good light, and trim it before it reaches the surface. Water figures are our estimate, not from the sources. Breeding

Spreads by rhizomes; divide plants or plant rooted side shoots.

Compatibility and tank mates

Goldfish and plant-eating fish may graze it. Suits tropical and subtropical tanks.
