Care

Nechamandra alternifolia is the only species in its genus, a submerged water plant of the frogbit family. It grows in slow-moving fresh water across South and South-east Asia, and is less common in lakes and ponds. It has in the past been placed in Vallisneria and Lagarosiphon, and you may see it sold under those names. Very little is published about its use in aquaria. By its relatives it is likely to grow as a slender stem with alternate narrow leaves, best planted in groups in the midground or background, with steady light and some nutrients. Water figures are our estimate, not from the sources; as a tropical lowland plant it should suit a normal heated tank. Breeding

No propagation details are recorded in the sources; like its relatives it should grow from stem cuttings.

Compatibility and tank mates

No reports of particular pests. Expect plant-eating fish such as goldfish and large cichlids to damage soft stems. Suited to tropical community tanks.
