Care

Najas pectinata is a submerged water nymph (naiad) in the frogbit family, listed among freshwater aquarium plants on Wikipedia's list. We could not reach a detailed source page for it, so little is known here about its natural range or its behaviour in aquaria. It is a tropical species reported from Africa. Like other naiads it is likely to form thin, branching, brittle stems with narrow toothed leaves, grown either planted in bunches or as a loose floating mass. Treat it like guppy grass (Najas guadalupensis): moderate light, regular trimming, and good nutrient uptake. Water figures are our estimate, not from the sources. Sources: Wikipedia, List of freshwater aquarium plant species. Checked October 2026.

Breeding

As with other Najas species, expect it to grow from broken stem fragments, which can be planted or left floating.

Compatibility and tank mates

Fine-leaved and soft, so herbivorous fish such as goldfish, silver dollars and large cichlids are likely to eat it. Well suited to shrimp and fry tanks.

  • Buyers are told to pay by PayPal Goods & Services, never PayPal Friends and Family, gift cards or crypto.
  • Live fish and other vertebrates must be sent by specialist live-animal couriers (for example APC Overnight or DX Express), never by Royal Mail. Some invertebrates and plants may go by Royal Mail Special Delivery or 1st Class within its rules.
  • Banned and invasive species (for example those on the GB invasive species lists) cannot be listed, and sellers must meet the site’s animal welfare standards.
  • Members must be 16 or over to buy (16 and 17-year-olds with a parent or guardian’s agreement); sellers must be 18 or over.
