Care
A small waterwort of temperate and subtropical parts of the Old World, reaching western Malesia; it has been introduced to New England in the USA, where it grows mainly around rivers. Waterworts (Elatine) are tiny, creeping annual or short-lived plants of muddy pond edges and shallow water, with pairs or whorls of small leaves. Our sources say nothing about this species in aquariums, so treat it as an experimental foreground or carpeting plant. Small creeping plants like this usually need good light and a fine, nutrient-rich substrate. Water figures are not given by the sources. It comes from temperate or Mediterranean climates, so expect it to do better in an unheated tank or pond margin than in a warm tropical tank. Sources: Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elatinetriandra); Wikipedia, List of freshwater aquarium plant species. Checked October 2026.
Breeding
Not described by our sources. Small creeping plants are usually increased by separating rooted pieces of the mat; annual waterworts also grow from seed.
Compatibility and tank mates
Delicate carpeting plants can be uprooted by digging fish and eaten by goldfish; shrimp and small fish leave them alone. Suits coldwater or unheated tanks better than warm tropical ones.
