Care

Typha angustifolia (lesser bulrush or narrowleaf cattail) is a tall marginal plant of fresh and brackish wetlands, often in deeper water than the common bulrush. It typically reaches 1.5–2 m (rarely 3 m), with slender leaves 3–12 mm wide that die back in autumn, and the familiar brown sausage-shaped flower spikes. It is far too large for aquaria and is not an underwater plant. Grow it in a large pond or wetland margin, ideally in a basket, as the strong rhizomes spread and can break pond liners. It is hardy and does best in cool climates. Its native status in North America is disputed, and it has spread inland there. Never release this plant or dispose of it in drains or waterways; it is invasive in some countries. Breeding

Spreads by stout rhizomes running about 70 cm; divide them in spring. It also produces vast numbers of tiny wind-borne seeds on fluffy hairs. Its hybrid with T. latifolia (T. ×glauca) is sterile and spreads only by rhizomes.

Compatibility and tank mates

Not for aquaria. In ponds it gives cover for wildlife and fish; contain it in a basket to stop it taking over.
