Care
Taxiphyllum barbieri is the moss most hobbyists know as Java moss; Tropica sells it as 'Bogor Moss'. It is a perennial South-East Asian moss of humid streamside places that forms loose cushions of irregular branches with flat leaves. In the trade, "Java moss" is also used for Vesicularia dubyana, and the two are hard to tell apart. It reached European aquarists in 1968, at first under the wrong name Glossadelphus zollingeri. It grows on almost anything. Tie it to stones, wood or roots with fishing line or cotton thread until it attaches; it is also useful for hiding equipment and can be grown as a moss carpet or wall. Tropica rates it easy, with low light and low CO2 needs and a medium growth rate; it builds up a layer about 3–10 cm thick. Trim it with scissors when it gets too dense, and remove trapped debris now and then. Wikipedia notes it tolerates all water types, even weakly brackish water, and a wide range of light, growing best at about 20–30 °C. Breeding
Spreads easily by division: pull or cut off a piece and tie it to new décor. Spore capsules rarely form in cultivation. It also grows well emersed in vivaria.
Compatibility and tank mates
Suits almost any freshwater tank. Shrimp graze the micro-organisms and debris it collects, and fry and tadpoles hide in it, which makes it a favourite for breeding tanks. Goldfish and large cichlids may pull at it but rarely eat much.
