Care

Micranthemum umbrosum is a delicate stem plant from the south-eastern USA with tiny round leaves on thin stems, giving a soft, cloud-like look. The genus is native from the eastern USA to tropical and subtropical America. Tropica rates it medium difficulty and fairly demanding of light, with medium CO2 needs. It reaches 10–15 cm within two months, and stems can reach 25 cm. Growth is slow to start but fast once established, and CO2 helps a lot. It looks best as a large group of many stems in small or large tanks. Pinch out the tips often to keep it bushy. Water figures are our estimate, not from the sources. Sources: Tropica (tropica.com/en/plants); Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micranthemum); Wikipedia, List of freshwater aquarium plant species. Checked October 2026.

Breeding

Pinched-out shoots can be planted straight into the substrate as cuttings; frequent pinching gives both a denser group and plenty of new plants.

Compatibility and tank mates

Fine-leaved stems trap debris and are grazed by goldfish, silver dollars and large cichlids. Shrimp, fry and small tetras and rasboras suit it well; avoid strong flow and heavy diggers.
