Care

Frogfishes are ambush predators that lure prey with a modified fin spine and can swallow fish almost as long as themselves. Keep one per tank with rockwork to perch on, low to moderate flow and good filtration, as they are heavy, messy feeders. Feed two or three times a week; avoid freshwater feeder fish. The largest of the commonly seen frogfishes; a fully grown fish needs a large tank. Wikipedia article not checked for this entry; details are from the list and general marine husbandry. Water figures here are general marine aquarium guidance, not species-specific: 24–27 °C, pH 8.1–8.4, salinity SG 1.023–1.026. Minimum tank size of about 300 litres is our estimate from the adult size and habits, not a published figure. Selling: our policies require the adult size and long-term tank needs to be stated clearly in the listing. Large fish must travel by a specialist live-animal courier (see the Livestock shipping guide). Diet

Eats fish and crustaceans. Offer whole marine fish, prawns and squid on a feeding stick.

Breeding

Breeding in home aquaria has not been reported in the sources used here.

Compatibility and tank mates

Not reef safe with small fish or shrimps; it will swallow any tankmate that fits in its mouth. Best kept alone.
