Giant ambulia is the largest of the aquarium Limnophila, with whorls of light green, finely divided leaves on stems that can reach 25–50 cm. Limnophila are herbs of marshes and shallow water across the tropics and subtropics of Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific. Submerged leaves are usually finely divided and in whorls, while leaves above water are simpler. Tropica rates it medium difficulty with medium light needs. It reaches 20–30 cm within two months and looks best as a group of several stems in the background of a large tank. Added CO2 and a nutrient-rich substrate give much faster, denser growth; in good light it branches sideways and becomes bushy. In open tanks it can grow above the surface and produce small blue flowers. Fine leaves catch debris and algae, so keep the water clean and well filtered. Water figures are our estimate, not from the sources. Breeding
Take top cuttings and replant them; cut stems branch from below. Side shoots can be removed and planted once they are a few centimetres long.
Compatibility and tank mates
Fine-leaved stems trap debris and are grazed by goldfish, silver dollars and large cichlids. Shrimp, fry and small tetras and rasboras suit it well; avoid strong flow and heavy diggers.
