Care

Aponogeton ulvaceus is a Madagascan bulb plant known for its delicate, translucent light-green leaves with fluted, wavy edges. A single bulb can produce more than 40 leaves, each 30–60 cm long, and spread up to 50 cm, so it is best grown as a solitary specimen in a large aquarium. Tropica rates it medium difficulty, with medium light and low CO2, though it does especially well with added CO2. It is fairly tolerant of water conditions and grows in both soft and hard water. Several varieties exist; some need a rest period when the bulb stops producing leaves. Aponogetons often pause after a season of growth and drop their leaves. If this happens, cut back water temperature or move the bulb to a cooler tank for a few weeks to two months; growth usually restarts. Water figures are our estimate, not from the sources. Breeding

Mostly sold as dry bulbs (tubers). Mature plants may produce seed after flowering; sow it on fine substrate under shallow water. Some forms can be divided at the rhizome.

Compatibility and tank mates

Snails and plant-eating fish (goldfish, large cichlids, silver dollars) may damage the soft leaves. Best with peaceful tropical community fish that do not dig up the bulb. Needs a large tank.
