Care

Typha latifolia (common bulrush, great reedmace or common cattail) is a tall wetland plant that always grows in or beside water, usually in up to about 1 m depth. It reaches 1.5–3 m, with broad leaves 2–4 cm wide that die back in autumn and thick brown seed heads that last through winter. It is not an aquarium plant. In a garden pond it needs a lot of space and should be planted in a strong basket, as its rhizomes are vigorous and can pierce liners. It is very hardy. It can crowd out native salt-marsh plants where salinity falls, and hybridises with Typha angustifolia. Never release this plant or dispose of it in drains or waterways; it is invasive in some countries. Breeding

Divide the rhizomes in spring. Seed heads release huge numbers of tiny wind-blown seeds, usually in spring.

Compatibility and tank mates

Not for aquaria. A large-pond and wildlife-wetland plant; keep it contained so it does not take over.
