Care

Clavularia viridis is a soft coral made of separate tubular polyps joined at the base by thin runners (stolons). Each polyp has eight feathery tentacles, usually green, brown, white or tan, often with a bright green centre. Place it mid to high on a rock where it can spread. LiveAquaria lists clove polyps as easy in care, with moderate light, medium flow and middle-to-top placement, and says they spread quickly in an established reef. Water: LiveAquaria gives dKH 8–12, pH 8.1–8.4, specific gravity 1.023–1.025 and 22–26 °C, with iodine and trace elements. Not CITES-listed. Sources: LiveAquaria (liveaquaria.com/products/glove-polyp). Checked October 2026.

Diet

Photosynthetic. Weekly microplankton or filter-feeder foods can help.

Breeding

Easy: cut a patch of polyps and runners from the rock with a scalpel, or place a bare rock beside the colony so runners grow across, then cut. Hold cuttings down with mesh or glue them at the base.

Compatibility and tank mates

It is easily stung by more aggressive corals, but it spreads quickly over rock and corals nearby. Keep it on an isolated rock.
