Care

Vesicularia montagnei, Christmas moss, gets its name from the side branches, which are arranged like the branches of a fir tree. This regular, layered structure separates it from ordinary Java moss. Tropica rates it medium difficulty, with medium light, low CO2 needs and a medium growth rate; it is more demanding and slower than Java moss and stays about 1–5 cm thick. It attaches readily to roots and stones; tie it on with thread until it holds. Prune it as it spreads to keep a neat shape. Clean water and moderate temperatures keep it looking its best. Water figures are our estimate, not from the sources. Sources: Tropica (tropica.com/en/plants); Wikipedia, List of freshwater aquarium plant species. Checked October 2026.

Breeding

Cut or pull off pieces and tie them to new décor. Tropica supplies it as tissue culture in closed cups, which is free of pests and algae.

Compatibility and tank mates

Excellent for shrimp and breeding tanks: shrimp graze it and fry shelter in it. Most fish leave it alone, though goldfish and large cichlids may tear it.
