Care

Despite its eel-like body and name, it is a dottyback, and at 45 cm the largest one. Its colour varies from green to brown, black or bluish, often spotted, and it can change colour to match its surroundings. Provide plenty of caves and crevices and a secure lid, as eel-shaped fish find any gap. It is occasionally traded and is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. Water figures here are general marine aquarium guidance, not species-specific: 24–27 °C, pH 8.1–8.4, salinity SG 1.020–1.025. Minimum tank size of about 400 litres is our estimate from the adult size and habits, not a published figure. Selling: our policies require the adult size and long-term tank needs to be stated clearly in the listing. Large fish must travel by a specialist live-animal courier (see the Livestock shipping guide). Diet

A predator of crustaceans and smaller fish. Offer meaty frozen and fresh seafood such as shrimp, mysis, squid and fish.

Breeding

Breeding in home aquaria has not been reported in the sources used here.

Compatibility and tank mates

Not reef safe: it eats shrimps, crabs and small fish. Keep with fish too large to swallow.
