Care

Warning: Brazil sword (a peace lily) is a land (or at most bog) plant, not a true aquatic plant. Kept fully underwater it slowly weakens and dies, often over several months, so it is best grown emersed in a paludarium or with only its roots in water. "Spathiphyllum tasson" is a trade name for a small peace lily sold as "Brazil sword"; it is not a recognised species, and our sources do not cover it separately. Peace lilies are evergreen perennials of humid tropical forest floors, growing in shady, wet places beside rivers and streams, often in colonies, and they put up with periodic flooding. They have glossy dark green leaves rising from a creeping stem and white spathe flowers. That flood tolerance is why they survive a while underwater, but they do not thrive submerged. Grow it with its roots in water and the leaves in the air, or in the wet land area of a paludarium. The plant is mildly toxic: it contains calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth and skin. Breeding

Divide established clumps at the creeping stem. Commercial plants are raised by tissue culture.

Compatibility and tank mates

Do not sell or buy this as a true aquarium plant. It belongs in a paludarium, terrarium or on a windowsill with its roots in water, out of reach of fish.
